2023 Ford Explorer vs 2023 Chevrolet Traverse
2023 Ford Explorer vs 2023 Chevrolet Traverse
View Inventory2023 Ford Explorer Overview
If you’re in the market for a compact crossover, then you’re likely considering the Explorer from Ford and the Traverse from Chevrolet. The Explorer available at Napa Ford is among the most popular options in the segment, and the Traverse is close behind it. One of the ways that Ford stands out when comparing the 2023 Ford Explorer vs 2023 Chevrolet Traverse is its approach to the customer base. Chevrolet targets the Traverse at a very particular customer, and its five trim levels—LS, LT, RS, Premier and High Country—really only differ in the degree of amenities and technologies you get. The Explorer, on the other hand, appeals to a wide range of consumers, and the trim selection reflects that. In fact, there are 10 trim levels altogether. In addition to the base Explorer, those include the XLT, ST-Line, Limited, Timberline, ST, Limited Hybrid, Platinum, Platinum Hybrid and King Ranch.
Exterior - Ford Dealer serving Napa CA
Both the 2023 Ford Explorer and 2023 Chevrolet Traverse are four-door midsize SUVs. The Traverse is a bit bigger. The Explorer has a 119.1-inch wheelbase and a 198.8-inch overall length—about 16.5 feet—whereas the Traverse has a 120.9-inch wheelbase and a 205.9-inch overall length. A characteristic we think favors the Explorer when comparing the 2023 Ford Explorer vs 2023 Chevrolet Traverse is that Ford has opted for an 8.2-inch minimum ground clearance whereas the Traverse has only 7.5 inches. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are standard in both cases. Chevrolet offers 20-inch wheels. Ford offers 20- and 21-inch wheels in a wide variety of finishes and designs, and you’ll find more diversity overall with the Ford as many of the upper trim levels have their own unique appearance packages.
Interior - 2023 Ford Explorer in Napa CA
Ford and Chevrolet take a similar approach in that eight-passenger seating in 2-3-3 configuration is standard, but most of the upper trim levels include the second-row captain’s chairs that reduce that capacity to seven. You can opt for the bench seat in most cases if you prefer it. Both models have an upscale interior even with the base package with features like premium cloth upholstery, triple-zone automatic climate control and a six-speaker audio system. The Ford does include satellite radio and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Both offer premium interior upgrades as well, but if you want a high-end cabin experience, Chevrolet doesn’t offer anything quite like the Platinum and King Ranch, which have real wood trim, leather-wrapped paneling and many other upgrades uncommon to this segment.
Ford Explorer Mechanical specs
In the introduction, we talked about how Ford caters to a diverse audience, and this is true when it comes to the mechanical configurations as well. The 2023 Chevrolet Traverse offers a single powertrain with a V6 engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and the one option you have is all-wheel drive, which is available with all 2023 Chevrolet Traverse trim levels. The 2023 Ford Explorer has a 10-speed automatic transmission. Its base engine is a turbo four, which is just as powerful as Chevy’s V6 but a better fuel performer. Drivers who want a performance powertrain have the option of a 400-hp turbo V6, and Ford also offers a hybrid powertrain that provides better performance and fuel economy than the base setup.
Safety - 2023 Ford Explorer dealer
Another way that Ford distinguishes the Explorer is the suite of driver-assistance technologies that are standard with all models sold and leased through Napa Ford. The Ford package is very impressive and ups the expectations for the entire class. You can get most but not all of those features with the Traverse. Selecting the LT trim level with the Premium package gets you close, and you have to step up all the way to the Premier trim level to get as close as you can.
