If you’re in the market for a compact crossover, then you’re likely considering the Explorer from Ford and the Traverse from Chevrolet. Chevrolet targets the Traverse at a very particular customer, and its five trim levels—LS, LT, RS, Premier and High Country—really only differ in the degree of amenities and technologies you get. The Explorer, on the other hand, appeals to a wide range of consumers, and the trim selection reflects that. In fact, there are 10 trim levels altogether. Ford and Chevrolet take a similar approach in that eight-passenger seating in 2-3-3 configuration is standard, but most of the upper trim levels include the second-row captain’s chairs that reduce that capacity to seven. You can opt for the bench seat in most cases if you prefer it. Both models have an upscale interior even with the base package with features like premium cloth upholstery, triple-zone automatic climate control and a six-speaker audio system. The Ford does include satellite radio and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Both offer premium interior upgrades as well, but if you want a high-end cabin experience, Chevrolet doesn’t offer anything quite like the Platinum and King Ranch, which have real wood trim, leather-wrapped paneling and many other upgrades uncommon to this segment.
