The name was chosen as an homage to the California Special Mustang, which in the late 1960s was introduced to celebrate the fact that Ford dealers in California had sold more Mustangs than any other. With the expectation that the new Mach-E was going to do quite well on the West Coast, it felt like a suitable name, and Ford tweaked it with a modern twist to honor one of California’s most famous roadways.
